KALKAN NOTES - September 2007

Kalkan is getting larger every year. The picture taken from the harbor pier is the simple evidence of this growth. If a guess is needed for the split, I am sure at least fifty percent of this growth is out of the town municipality borders. It is not a good face of this lovely small town as outside the municipality borders, during the construction of new houses, neither the local authority enforces the urbanization rule to be followed strictly, nor is sought by the land owners. Today, there is an ongoing irregularity that can never be rectified later. In long term, it is sure that the value of the fixed asset in such an ill-fated district of the town will be much behind the value it should have had. Unfortunately, the irregularity takes place at the hills above the harbor, where we can say that these lands are the visible face of Kalkan. Consequently, Kalkan as a whole gets damages due to the irregularities. Any paralyzed structure will be likely to be permanent. However, despite the illicit behavior outside the municipality, within the borders it seems everything is perfectly in order. These parts of the town possess every characteristics of a well structurized modern city. While everything is all right within municipality border, outside, the municipality management washes hand. They may be right according to the law, thus the municipality is not ruling authority. Who is then? The ruling authority within the town is the governmental official, namely so called Kaymakam. This authority can not be impassive while there is an illegal growth in the skirts of such beautiful town for which he is responsible. As an inhabitant of this town, where and when necessary, I will direct the attentions to the irregularities.

Kalkan municipality has been achieving a target well before planned: sewage system. I could not pass without mentioning this happy improvement. Congratulations.

Another good improvement is the town video monitoring system under construction, pushed by Kalkander. I also congratulate our association, although small but becoming more powerful everyday.

You will find more news from Kalkan in next articles. Stay tuned till then and goodbye.
